On today's podcast, Maggie and Nat interview our very inspiring friend Yumi Kikuchi. Fairewinds has been working with Yumi for more than a year now. She encouraged us to send material to the Tokyo Peace Film Festival, which she organized, and we sent our film "You are not alone." Yumi also co-sponsored Arnie's trip to Japan in 2012, where he gave the presentation "Japan at a Crossroads: Two Futures." Yumi left Japan with her family after the Fukushima Daiichi accident, and currently lives in Hawaii. She founded the Fukushima Kids Hawaii Project (FKHP), usually shortened to Fukushima Kids, and has just returned to Japan where she will be spreading awareness about the project and fundraising. Fukushima Kids aims to host children from Fukushima in Hawaii during school vacations, where they can play outdoors safe from high radiation levels. Children are more vulnerable to the effects of radiation than adults, and we are already seeing signs of thyroid cancer and cysts among children in Fukushima. There are about 300,000 kids living in the Fukushima prefecture, and Yumi is hoping to host 15 kids this first summer.

NWJ: Welcome to the Fairewinds Energy Education Podcast for June 19th. My name is Nathanial White-Joyal. And today I am joined by Yumi Kikuchi live via Skype from Hawaii. And here in our studios we are joined by President of Fairewinds, Maggie Gundersen. Today we’re going to discuss the Aloha Fukushima Kids Hawaii Project and how we can help the children from Fukushima. This is an issue that’s close to all of our hearts at Fairewinds. Thank you both for taking the time to speak with us.
YK: Thank you for having me.
MG: Thank you for having me.
NWJ: Yumi, let’s talk a little bit about what the Fukushima Kids Project is and what you hope to achieve.
YK: The Fukushima Kids Hawaii Project is trying to bring children from Fukushima to spend the summer vacation, July to August, in Hawaii. And the reason we are doing this is we are all mothers. I’m from Japan and I actually moved from Japan to Hawaii after the earthquake and the whole nuclear accident – the accident of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plants on March 11 and after, for fear of radiation risk to the children and also we were always wanting to live in Hawaii. So that was – okay, this is the time. We should move quickly. And I thought the government would relocate kids, like they did in Russia, in those areas of high contamination, people shouldn’t be living. But what they did instead was raising the standard higher so that they can live in the standard. It’s legal for them to live. And I’m very, very, very concerned about the future and the health of the children in the area. And I know many people have left. Many – I should say maybe less than 10 percent or much less than 10 percent have left and most of the people are still there. And there are about 267,000 children as I speak today. And the reason they are staying is they have many – economy is the biggest reason. They can’t find jobs in other areas. And those people are not able to move –
NWJ: If people are not able to move, then that must mean that whole families are being affected by the radiation from the Fukushima Daiichi meltdown.
YK: Yes. So those people are staying for a reason, even though they have – they do want their kids to have a healthy, long life like every mother or father does. So we are hosting the children from Fukushima in Hawaii during their school breaks. And in Japan we have school vacation in summertime, wintertime and springtime, three times a year. So during those times, I’m hoping if I can raise enough awareness and support – I need money – I can bring as many children as possible to Hawaii because there are many willingness in my community to host children from Fukushima. And that’s also good for us on the receiving end of the Fukushima children to learn about what is at stake when you have nuclear power plants. Because we have lots of nuclear power plants on this planet and some of them are on earthquake faults, like San Onofre nuclear power plant which is now shut down. But radioactive spent fuel and all the waste is still there and we don’t know what to do. So it’s very human awakening thing. This thing is happening to us. So that we will be learning more about how to deal with the radiation, especially that high-level waste, the spent fuel. We adults need to be responsible for what we’ve created for all our children. So Fukushima Kids Hawaii primary purpose is to bring – to give children a chance to breathe the air and to play outside and to swim in the ocean, to see the dolphins and climb up the mountains and all that they are prohibited to do now in Fukushima. So that’s a primary reason. But in the long run, I have a dream of we humans evolving to become more responsible stewards of the planet and we do not rely on nuclear power plants and we have more safe energy that is not creating a problem for future generations. That’s my long-term vision. So this is just a small, tiny beginning, but a small thing can become big.
MG: I think this is a really good beginning. And it’s really important when we look at what’s happening. Fairewinds has done an enormous amount of work on trying to get the information out about the truth of what’s happening in Japan. Currently we have a blog up on the website called Demystifying Nuclear Power and Art Keller is a guest writer who has written about the misinformation that the Japanese government is giving out and that technicians who are trained to take the radiation readings are giving extremely low radiation readings. Plus the standard has been raised. So it’s a double whammy. And we’re also working with different medical professionals who are talking about how many thyroid cancers have started showing up. After an accident of the magnitude of Fukushima Daiichi, the thyroid readings that they’re getting now at two years should have been something around five years. So that must mean that much more radiation came out than anyone every suspected –
NWJ: Or at least reported.
MG: Or at least reported, yeah. It’s hard to know in what’s come out unless you know what was inside and what was producing the radiation and what the fuel count is. So it’s a back calculation. And you raised the issue of the San Onofre plant. That was Fairewinds work. We worked on that project for 18 months and did many, many testimonies. And Arnie testified in front of the NRC and in the Atomic Safety & Licensing Board’s decision, they quoted Fairewinds’ report 11 times just in the first three pages.
YK: I’m so grateful. That news came when I was in California raising funds for Fukushima Kids. So I was so thrilled and rejoicing with all my friends who are other mothers in California who are raising money with me. So oh, you mean so much to us and thank you, I really appreciate what you do.
MG: Well, we really appreciate what you’re doing.
YK: Oh, we need each other to make this happen because this is a turning point… This tragedy in future when we look back – this tragedy, loss of so many lives is something at the end we all will look back and we are grateful for – that’s my reason. We want this a turning point for humanity to wake up to live more carefully and consciously with the planet and with each other. I’m Japanese and you’re American – 65 years ago, we were killing each other. But we’ve come this far. We’re not killing each other now. We are helping. And humans are wonderful. We have capability to help each other and support each other, love each other. And we now can care for the earth, too. The Mother Earth, my ocean here, the Pacific Ocean is crying. Why do you dump all the radiation into me? All my fish is dying. That’s what’s happening. And I hope this can turn things around and we live more carefully, consciously, more compassionately, so to speak. It’s my vision. And you have the same vision, right?
MG: Yes. I have definitely the same vision.
NWJ: So then what can we do to make this vision a reality for the 300,000 children of Fukushima?
YK: If I had the power, I could bring 300,000 kids, but I don’t have power – nothing – I’m just one mother and I’m not rich personally. I don’t have influence. But I will do what I can. What I’m trying to do is very small. At this time, it’s only 20 kids. But if I can do 20 kids, some people can do maybe 3 kids or 10 kids in other parts of the United States. If we can get to know each other and we coordinate, this can become an international movement, it can become trendy to have Japanese kids for summer and to have fun and host families. I’m thinking along that line, this can become a big international movement.
MG: So this is the first year; this is your kick-off year.
YK: There are people who are doing it. I’ve seen many other people who have done it. But they are staying only one week. I want to make it longer, like one month or longer so that their health can get better. And eventually in Hawaii we are also wanting for kids to stay like a year – for them to learn English, like come to study abroad thing. It becomes a trendy – and if Fukushima kids suffer from radiation, they have some benefit by – they don’t go through such a horror and if they have some benefit of learning, studying abroad and learning English, their life becomes more with choice in the future. I’m hoping to be able to give them an opportunity for children who are suffering, because they have zero responsibility for that radiation. They shouldn’t be getting any exposure. Japanese adults were so stupid to have so many – 54 nuclear reactors just to begin with on earthquake faults. Now that’s a wrong decision we made – not me but my prior generation made. So this is my mission and I’m leaving for Japan today actually.
NWJ: That’s good news for Japan. I’m sure the Fairewinds listeners are anxious to know what you have planned for this trip.
YK: For my trip in Japan, I’m doing speaking tours and one is in Tokyo on June 24th at Hokutopia, Canary Hall at 7 p.m. I’m speaking and I’m playing flute. That’s one thing I do – my music. So I’ll be doing that on the 24th. And other than that, I’m meeting people who are going to support this project and try to get as much funds as possible so that many people can come.
NWJ: So tell us a little bit about what the Fukushima Kids Project needs to be successful.
YK: Okay. I am looking for the funding of the airfare, which is about $40,000 as I speak today. $40,000 I’m going to raise. I hope to be able to raise that much. We’ll see. I raised – up to now, I’ve raised about 1 million yen, about $10,000, so another $30,000 to go.
NWJ: Yumi, what can our listeners do to help you reach your goals and bring these 20 children to Hawaii?
YK: Yes. I have a website. It’s called Harmonics Life Center. If you want to make a tax deductible donation, it’s a foundation NPO – it’s called IAM-CED NPO supporting Fukushima Kids Project. So you can donate there and make sure it goes to Fukushima kids. Then the money will come to us and it’s tax deductible. Some people prefer that way.
NWJ: Yumi, this is an issue that faces the whole world. Thank you for your work on this incredibly important project.
YK: We are in this together.
MG: I know. I know. Yumi, I so honor your work and I will be sending many blessings. Fairewinds will keep talking about this issue. We’ll be thinking of you the whole time you’re in Japan and we hope to have you back on again once you’re back.
YK: We’re expecting they come here June 20th and my house on August 3rd. The kids are going to many places in Hawaii and they’re going to be coming to my area August 3rd to 15th.

Nathaniel White-Joyal: Yumi, erzähl uns doch bitte ein bisschen darüber, was das AFKHP ist und was ihr erreichen wollt.
Yumi Kikuchi: Das Fukushima Kids Hawaii Project versucht, Kinder aus Fukushima nach Hawaii zu holen, damit sie die Sommerferien, also Juli und August, hier verbringen können. Wir engagieren uns, weil alle von uns Mütter sind. Ich bin übrigens nach dem Erdbeben und dem Atomunfall in der Anlage von Fukushima Daiichi am 11. März [2011] aus Japan nach Hawaii gezogen – und zwar aus Angst um die Kinder auf Grund des Strahlenrisikos. Außerdem wollten wir schon immer in Hawaii leben und so haben wir gesagt: „Jetzt ist der Zeitpunkt gekommen, wir sollten nun rasch handeln.“ Ich habe angenommen, dass unsere Regierung die Kinder aussiedeln würde, wie es die Regierung in Russland bei stark verseuchten Gebieten, in denen keine Menschen leben sollten, auch getan hat. Sie haben aber einfach die zulässigen Grenzwerte erhöht, die ein Gebiet juristisch als bedenklich bzw unbedenklich ausweisen! Ich bin daher um die Zukunft und die Gesundheit der Kinder in der Region äußerst besorgt. Ich weiß, dass viele Menschen fortgezogen sind – oder, ich sollte eigentlich sagen, manche sind weggegangen, wenige, viel weniger als 10%. Die meisten Leute sind also noch vor Ort, darunter sind zum heutigen Zeitpunkt 260.000 Kinder. Der Grund, warum sie bleiben, ist oft wirtschaftlicher Natur: die Eltern finden woanders keine Arbeitsstelle, daher können sie nicht wegziehen.
Nathaniel White-Joyal: Wenn diese Menschen nicht wegziehen können, dann bedeutet das doch, dass ganze Familien durch die Strahlung der Kernschmelzen in Fukushima Daiichi betroffen sind?
Yumi Kikuchi: Ja. Nun, es gibt Gründe, warum diese Leute bleiben, selbst wenn sie als Mutter und Vater ihren Kindern ein langes und gesundes Leben wünschen – natürlich tun sie das. Wir laden diese Kinder aus Fukushima also ein, ihre Ferien bei uns in Hawaii zu verbringen. In Japan gibt es Schulferien im Sommer, Winter und Frühling - drei Mal im Jahr. Wenn es mir gelingt, genügend Menschen auf diese Sache aufmerksam zu machen und ausreichend Unterstützung und Mittel mobilisieren kann, dann hoffe ich, so viele Kinder wie nur möglich zu diesen Ferienzeiten nach Hawaii zu bringen. Es gibt in unserer Gemeinschaft eine große Bereitschaft, Kinder aus Fukushima aufzunehmen. Es ist auch sehr hilfreich für uns selbst, von diesen Kindern aus Fukushima zu lernen, was alles auf dem Spiel steht, wenn man AKWs betreibt. Wir haben ja eine ganze Menge von AKWs auf diesem Planeten, einige davon befinden sich auf erdbebengefährdeten geologischen Verwerfungslinien, wie das AKW von San Onofre [in Kalifornien]. Dieses Kraftwerk wurde nun stillgelegt, aber die radioaktiven abgebrannten Brennelemente und der Atommüll sind immer noch vor Ort und wir wissen nicht, was wir damit machen sollen. Es geht also auch um die Schaffung von mehr Bewusstsein, damit wir aufwachen und bemerken was mit uns geschieht, damit wir über unseren Umgang mit radioaktiven Stoffen Bescheid wissen, speziell, wenn es um hochaktive Abfälle geht, insbesondere die abgebrannten Brennelemente. Wir Erwachsene müssen uns bei dem, was wir unseren Kindern überantworten, verantwortlich verhalten. Die Hauptaufgabe des Fukushima Kids Hawaii Project liegt also darin, Kindern die Möglichkeit zu geben, die Luft zu atmen, im Freien zu spielen oder im Meer schwimmen zu gehen, Delfine zu sehen und Wanderungen in den Bergen zu unternehmen – alles das zu tun, was ihnen in Fukushima nun verboten ist. Darum geht es in erster Linie. Langfristig habe ich aber die Hoffnung, dass wir Menschen in unserer Entwicklung so weit fortschreiten, dass wir zu verantwortlichen Bewahrern des Planten werden, dass wir uns nicht von AKWs abhängig machen und wir sichere Energien nutzen, die für zukünftige Generationen keine Probleme erzeugt: Das wäre langfristig mein Ziel. Dies ist nur ein kleiner, bescheidener Anfang. Aber wer weiß? Kleine Dinge können wachsen…
Maggie Gundersen: Ich glaube, das ist ein sehr guter Anfang. Es ist ganz wichtig, sich einmal anzuschauen, was vor sich geht. Fairewinds hat enorme Anstrengungen unternommen, um die Wahrheit über das, was sich in Japan abspielt, zu verbreiten. Wir haben auf unserer Webseite einen Blog, der mit „Entzauberung der Atomkraft“ betitelt ist. Art Keller ist dort ein Gastkommentator, der über die Fehlinformationen, die von der japanischen Regierung propagiert werden, geschrieben hat: Technisches Personal, das darin geschult ist, Strahlungswerte zu bestimmen und extrem niedrige Werte findet. Zusätzlich wurden ja die Grenzwerte erhöht. Es ist also ein Angriff von beiden Seiten. Wir arbeiten auch mit verschiedenen Fachleuten im medizinischen Bereich, die davon sprechen, wie viel Schilddrüsenkrebs nach einem Unfall im Ausmaß von Fukushima Daiichi entsteht. Die Werte, die sie nun, zwei Jahre nach Fukushima feststellen, sollten eigentlich erst nach fünf Jahren auftreten. Das bedeutet aber, dass viel mehr Strahlung freigesetzt worden sein dürfte, als irgendjemand jemals vermutet hat.
Nathaniel White-Joyal: Oder jedenfalls veröffentlicht hat…
Maggie Gundersen: … oder veröffentlicht hat, richtig. Es ist schwer zu beurteilen, wie viel Strahlung frei gesetzt wurde, es sei denn, man weiß genau, wie viel des Spaltmaterials im inneren der Anlage noch vorhanden ist, wie die Strahlung frei gesetzt wurde und wie hoch die Zahl der betroffenen Brennelemente ist. Man rechnet also zurück. Du hast die Anlage von San Onofre angesprochen: Das war die Arbeit von Fairewinds. Wir haben on diesem Projekt 18 Monate lang gearbeitet, Arnie [Gundersen] hat viele Zeugenaussagen gemacht und vor der Atomaufsichtsbehörde NRC gesprochen. In dem schließlich vom Atomic Safety and Licencing Board [einem von der NRC einberufenen Entscheidungsfindungsgremium; AdÜ] gefällten Urteil wurde der Bericht von Fairewinds 11 Mal zitiert – und das schon auf den ersten drei Seiten.
Yumi Kikuchi: Ich bin so unglaublich dankbar. Diese Nachricht kam gerade zu der Zeit, als ich in Kalifornien war, um Mittel für die Fukushima Kids zu beschaffen. Ich war begeistert, alle meine Freunde, andere Mütter in Kalifornien, die auch in Sachen Geldbeschaffung mitgeholfen haben, waren froh darüber – ihr seid uns unglaublich wichtig und wir schätzen ganz außerordentlich, was ihr tut.
Maggie Gundersen: Nun, wir schätzen genauso, was ihr leistet und…
Yumi Kikuchi: Wir benötigen uns gegenseitig, damit etwas vorangeht.
Maggie Gundersen: Ich weiß.
Yumi Kikuchi: Wir befinden uns an einem Wendepunkt, wir brauchen Hoffnung. Wenn wir in Zukunft auf diese Tragödie zurückblicken, die so viele Menschenleben gefordert hat, dann wird es schlussendlich etwas sein, wofür wir dankbar sein werden - das ist meine Ansicht. Wir wollen, dass es zu einem Wendepunkt in der Menschheitsgeschichte wird, dass wir uns bewusst werden, hinkünftig achtsamer zu leben, stolz und gemeinsam mit anderen. Weißt du, ich bin Japanerin und du bist eine Staatsbürgerin der USA, vor 65 haben wir uns gegenseitig umgebracht, aber wir sind nun so weit gekommen: Wir töten den anderen nicht mehr, sondern wir helfen uns gegenseitig. Die Menschen sind wunderbar, wir haben die Fähigkeit uns zu unterstützen und zu uns zu helfen und auch zu lieben. Wir müssen auch achtsam mit unserer Mutter Erde sein, den Weltmeeren. Der Pazifik ist ein Bild des Jammers: „Warum habt ihr all diese Radioaktivität in mich hineingeschüttet, die Fische sterben!“ Das ist es, was passiert, und ich hoffe, dass diese Erfahrung zu einem Umdenken führt, und dass wir sorgenfreier, bewusster, mitfühlender leben werden, das ist meine Vision für die Zukunft – die eure ist die Gleiche, nicht wahr?
Maggie Gundersen: Ja, ich habe absolut die gleiche Vision.
Nathaniel White-Joyal: Yumi, was kann nun also getan werden, damit diese Vision für die 300.000 Kinder von Fukushima zur Realität wird?
Yumi Kikuchi: Wenn ich die Macht dazu hätte, dann würde ich die 300.000 Kids umsiedeln [? unklar; AdÜ], aber diese Macht habe ich nicht, nicht im Geringsten, ich bin nur eine einzelne Mutter. Ich bin auch nicht reich, ich habe wenig Einflussmöglichkeiten – aber ich will tun, was ich kann. Was ich zu erreichen versuche ist momentan noch von bescheidenem Umfang: Es geht um 20 Kinder. Aber wenn ich zwanzig Kinder unterbringen kann, dann andere Leute vielleicht drei Kinder oder zehn Kinder in anderen Teilen der USA, wir können in Kontakt kommen und das Vorhaben gemeinsam koordinieren. Es kann eine internationale Bewegung daraus werden, es könnte einfach „in“ sein, ein paar japanische Kinder über den Sommer zu beherbergen und mit der Gastfamilie zusammen Spaß zu haben – in diese Richtung gehen meine Hoffnungen. Dies könnte international eine große Bewegung werden.
Maggie Gundersen: Dies ist dein erstes Jahr, der Startschuss gewissermaßen?
Yumi Kikuchi: Viele andere Leute haben es auch schon gemacht, aber die Aufenthalte sind oft nur eine Woche. Ich möchte diese Aufenthalte ausdehnen, auf einen Monat oder mehr, damit sich der Gesundheitszustand der Kinder wirklich verbessern kann. Wir möchten hier in Hawaii auch, dass die Kinder länger bleiben, dass sie Englisch lernen, im Ausland studieren können, das liegt ohnehin im Zug der Zeit. Diese Kinder von Fukushima, die durch die Radioaktivität belastet sind und so einen Schrecken durchgemacht haben, könnten wenigstens einen gewissen Nutzen dadurch erzielen, dass sie im Ausland studieren und Englisch lernen. Dadurch ergeben sich für ihr Leben in der Zukunft mehr Möglichkeiten. Wir hoffen, dass wir Kindern, denen es ja nicht gut geht, diese Möglichkeit geben können. Sie trifft kein Verschulden, was die Verstrahlung angeht, sie sollten überhaupt keine Belastung erfahren. Es sind die japanischen Behörden, die so dumm waren, 54 Atomreaktoren in der Nähe von geologischen Verwerfungen zu bauen. Das war eine Fehlentscheidung die wir getroffen haben – nicht ich persönlich, aber unsere Generation. Das ist also mein Vorhaben. Es ist auch tatsächlich so, dass ich heute noch nach Japan abreisen werde.
Nathaniel White-Joyal: Das sind gute Nachrichten für Japan. Unsere Zuhörer bei Fairewinds sind nun natürlich begierig zu erfahren, was für diese Reise geplant ist?
Yumi Kikuchi: Während meiner Japanreise werde ich auch Vorträge halten, einer wird in Tokio am 24. Juni stattfinden, wo ich um 19:00 Uhr im Hokutopia, in der Canary Hall, sprechen und auch Flöte spielen werde – das ist eines von den Dingen, die betreibe: Musik machen. Das werde also am 24. passieren und außerdem werde ich Leute treffen, die dieses Vorhaben unterstützen, um so viele Mittel wie möglich zu beschaffen, damit die größtmögliche Anzahl von Kindern kommen kann.
Nathaniel White-Joyal: Was benötigt das Fukushima Kids Projekt, damit es erfolgreich sein kann?
Yumi Kikuchi: Ich bin gerade dabei, die Flugtickets zu finanzieren, das wird 2.500 bis 3.000 € ausmachen, soweit man mich heute informiert hat. Ich versuche 2.500 € aufzutreiben, hoffentlich bekomme ich sie zusammen. Wir werden sehen. Bis jetzt habe ich etwa 1 Mio Yen, das sind ca 8.000 €, aber um die 2.500 € [Yumi Kikuchi sagt 30.000 ¥, meint aber wohl 300.000 ¥; AdÜ] fehlen noch.
Nathaniel White-Joyal: Was können unsere Hörer tun um mitzuhelfen, das Ziel zu erreichen, 20 Kinder nach Hawaii zu bringen?
Yumi Kikuchi: Man kann eine Spende über das Harmonics Life Center machen. Wenn man die Spende von der Steuer abziehen will, dann gibt es eine Stiftung, eine gemeinnützige Organisation namens IAM-CED (http://iam-ced.org/Donate.html), die das Fukushima Kids Project unterstützt. Man kann dorthin spenden, aber man muss natürlich klar machen, dass die Spende für Fukushima Kids gedacht ist, dann werden wir das Geld erhalten. Wie gesagt, diese Spende ist steuerabzugsfähig, für manche Leute ist das vorteilhaft.
